Our lad of the hour is Derek Cornelius, born on November 25, 1997. This Canadian skelped its way into our hearts by building a career primarily as a central defender for... dare I say it... Rangers. Standing tall at 6'2" (1.88m in new money), and tipping the scales at 13st 7lb (86kg if you prefer the metric malarkey), Cornelius has definitely got what it takes physically to be a central defender. Bears the illustrious jersey number 13, that's an interesting tidbit, isn't it? With a wee international flavour, Cornelius has represented Canada's national team as well, slapping an unmistakable international brand on that CV.
Let's meander through Cornelius's transfer history for a bit. His tryst with serious football began in January 2017 when he swapped the snow of Neumünster in the Regionalliga Nord in Germany for the frostbite of Javor Ivanjica in the SuperLiga in Serbia. After two years there, our gallivanting lad made the cross-Atlantic jump to Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS in the US – the land of opportunities, or so they say. Looking at his appearances, well, it seems he was a wee bit shy at first – 17, 13, and 5 appearances in 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively at Vancouver Whitecaps.
In July 2021, he was swept off his feet, or rather his boots, to grace Panetolikos's Super League stint in Greece on a loan deal. Raked up 29 appearances in 2021-22 and 13 appearances in 2022-23 in the Hellenic land. Not one for settling, our intrepid defender, was he?
January 2023 brought him to Malmo FF in the Allsvenskan in Sweden, lured likely by zealous Swedish fans and the promise of an undisclosed fee. He indeed left his mark there with 25 appearances in 2023 and 12 appearances in 2024.
Then, seemingly pursued by the European classics, Cornelius opted for a stint with Marseille in the Ligue 1 in France in August 2024, signing off on a transfer exchange of £3.4 million. No small change that, huh? He certainly made his presence felt in French fields with 21 appearances in 2024-25 and 2 this season.
In a move that perhaps shocked some, Cornelius made the leap in September 2025 to Rangers in Scotland, trading baguettes for bannocks on a loan deal. He's made 7 first-team appearances and banged in one goal in league matches this season.
The nomadic defender has also shown off his skills in various tournaments so far. The League Cup 2025-26 saw him start twice for Rangers, while he also has a couple of starts for Canada in the Gold Cup 2025. Not to forget the Europa League 2025-26 where he notched up 2 starts and a substitute appearance for Rangers. Juggling those different competitions must keep our lad quite busy, only if there were frequent flyer miles for these football transfers.
