Meet Djeidi Gassama, a name scrawled on 10 September 2003 somewhere in Mauritania, and some 22 years later to be found scurrying about the Rangers frontline. Gassama, a left winger who stands at a simplistic 1.77m (5ft 9in) - not too big, not too wee - wears a jersey emblazoned with the number 23. He also tips the scales at 70kg (11st), a true testament to the powers of a dietician, we presume.
Ah, it appears our esteemed friends at Transfermarkt value the lad at a cool £4m. I’m sure they've got their calculators out to handle the Euros to Pounds conversion. Endearing stuff, you know.
Once upon a time, specifically July 2019, Gassama thought he might give Paris Saint-Germain in France's Ligue 1 a bash as a trainee. And as it seems it was a slow year for the lad in the 2021-2022 season, managing only one appearance in first-team league matches. Not exactly what you'd call hitting the ground running...or walking for that matter.
Then came September 2022, a moment Gassama probably refers to as 'the Belgian interlude'. He departed Paris Saint-Germain, on loan to Eupen in the Challenger Pro League in Belgium. Here he managed to squeeze in 19 first-team appearances and even smashed home two goals. Not exactly raining goals, but it seemed to rain first-team appearances.
Now, and I hope you're sitting for this, came a transfer in August 2023. From Paris to the glamour of…Sheffield. The lad transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in England's Championship, for an undisclosed fee. In Yorkshire, he made 35 first-team appearances and scored three goals in his first season, eventually knocking together seven goals in 43 appearances during the subsequent season. An improvement, we suppose, if ascending from a trot to a canter can be summed up as such.
Moving swiftly - something we can’t exactly attribute to Gassama’s goal rate - to July 2025, he moved north to Scotland’s Premiership. Rangers got their cheque books out and decided a laughable £2.2m was about right for our man. So far, in the 2025-2026 season, he's graced the pitch 23 times and bagged a couple of goals.
Our boy has apparently been quite a busy bee in various cups and leagues. In the League Cup, he managed a single start and a substitute appearance. The Scottish Cup saw him start once, while the Champions League Qualifiers gifted him four goals from six appearances, and the Europa League brought about a sole goal from seven outings. To sum up that wee accounting session, our Gassama seems to have more cups and leagues to his name than goals. Intriguing, to say the least.
