Ian Maatsen

Ian Maatsen of Aston Villa was born in Vlaardingen, Netherlands on 10 March 2002 (age 24).

Ian Maatsen is a Dutch left-back, born on 10 March 2002 (age 24), and is now with Aston Villa. Compact at 5ft 7in (1.70m), he has built his senior career as a modern full-back rather than the old chalk-on-boots type.

His strongest league season came at Burnley in 2022-23, when he scored four goals in 39 appearances. That campaign did plenty for his profile, showing he could handle regular football and contribute beyond his own third.

At Aston Villa, Maatsen wears the number 22 shirt. In 2026-27 he has made 15 appearances across competitions, including five in the Premier League, two in the FA Cup, one in the League Cup, one in the UEFA Super Cup and one in the Champions League. His market value is around £27m, according to Transfermarkt.

Maatsen’s career to this point is that of an established young Dutch defender who has already had one properly productive league season and is now working through a sizeable step at Aston Villa.
