James Tavernier, born 31 October 1991 (age 34), is an English right-back whose career has been defined overwhelmingly by Rangers. His early years were shaped by loan football, useful if unglamorous schooling before he became a settled senior player in Glasgow.
At Rangers, Tavernier moved from regular full-back to captain and long-serving reference point. Across 11 seasons he has made 382 league appearances and scored 102 league goals, an exceptional return for a defender by any sensible measure. His most productive league season came in 2023-2024, when he scored 17 times in 38 appearances.
His time there has also brought a Premiership title, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup. Celtic supporters hardly need reminding of his prominence in that period, though his longevity and output have made him one of the more significant opponents of the era.
He remains a first-team presence in 2025-2026, with 34 league appearances and eight league goals, plus further involvement in the Scottish Cup, Champions League qualifiers and Europa League. In all competitions for Rangers this season, he has made 49 appearances and scored 12 goals.
His current market value is around £850,000, according to Transfermarkt. However the rest of his career is framed, Tavernier’s story is essentially Rangers: captaincy, durability, trophies and a goal return from right-back that has kept him relevant well into his thirties.
