James Tavernier, born 31 October 1991 (age 34), is an English right-back and the current captain of Rangers. His early career included loan spells that gave him senior football before he settled into the role that has come to define him: a long-serving, attacking full-back on the other side of Glasgow.
Rangers have overwhelmingly shaped his career. Across 11 seasons he has made 381 league appearances and scored 102 league goals, a return that would be notable for a midfielder and is faintly absurd for a defender. His most productive league campaign came in 2023-24, when he scored 17 times in 38 appearances.
That output has not been a brief curiosity. In 2025-26 he remains a regular presence, with 33 league appearances and eight league goals, plus further contributions in domestic cups and Europe. Across all competitions this season he has made 51 appearances and scored 14 goals. His form has been strong overall, though there has been a slight dip lately.
Tavernier’s Rangers years have also brought a Premiership, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup, giving his captaincy a solid enough platform beyond the penalties, set-pieces and open-play raids. His market value is around £850,000, according to Transfermarkt.
For all the early movement in his career, Tavernier’s story is essentially a Rangers one: long service, steady authority, unusual numbers from right-back, and continuing relevance in a side that still relies heavily on him.
