Mario Hermoso, born on 18 June 1995 (age 31), is a Spanish central defender with Roma. He came through Real Madrid’s system, but the useful early education came away from the usual academy comfort. A loan at Real Valladolid gave him senior football and a clearer sense of the demands placed on a defender outside a protected development set-up.
Espanyol was where his career properly took shape. Hermoso became a regular there and, in 2018-2019, had his most productive league season, scoring three goals in 32 appearances. That spell did enough to move him from promising graduate to established La Liga defender, which is no small step in a market that enjoys confusing the two.
He later moved on to Atlético Madrid, adding experience at a higher level and in a more demanding defensive structure, before joining Roma. In 2026-2027, he has made one Serie A appearance for Roma. His current market value is around £6m, according to Transfermarkt.
Hermoso’s career has been built steadily rather than spectacularly: Real Madrid development, senior grounding on loan, a strong Espanyol spell, then years at bigger clubs in Spain and Italy. He remains an experienced Spanish centre-back operating at Serie A level.
