Steven Berghuis, born on 19 December 1991 (age 34), is a Dutch right-sided attacker with Ajax, where he wears the number 23. He has spent much of his career as a right winger, though his game has often carried enough craft to move inside rather than simply live on the touchline.
He came through in the Netherlands with FC Twente, and an early loan to VVV-Venlo gave him the kind of senior football young forwards tend to need more than another season of promises. From there he moved to AZ, where his Eredivisie career properly gathered pace before a spell in England with Watford.
Berghuis found his best sustained club form back in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, first on loan and then permanently. His most productive league season came in 2017-2018, when he scored 18 goals in 31 league appearances. That was the period when he looked less like a wide player with moments and more like a regular source of damage.
His move to Ajax kept him at the sharp end of Dutch football rather than sending him off into a quieter late-career lane. In 2025-2026 he remains a regular first-team presence, with 22 appearances and 4 goals across all competitions, including 19 Eredivisie appearances. His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt.
Berghuis’s career has been shaped by a steady return to Dutch football after his English detour: development at Twente, refinement through loans and AZ, a strong Feyenoord spell, and a continuing role at Ajax into his mid-thirties.
