Tony Watt was born in Coatbridge on 29 December 1993 (age 32), and came through at Airdrieonians before Celtic moved for him in January 2011 for around £100,000. That early switch gave him a platform quickly, even if his Celtic career did not settle into anything especially long or straightforward.
His development was shaped as much by what followed as by the move itself. Watt left Celtic in July 2014, joining Standard Liege for around £1m, and then worked his way through a varied run of clubs including Charlton Athletic, Oud-Heverlee Leuven, St Johnstone, CSKA Sofia, Dundee United and Partick Thistle. There was also a more settled spell at Motherwell, where he looked less like a young forward chasing the next opening and more like an established senior player.
His best league return came at Dundee United in 2023-24, when he scored 13 goals in 36 appearances. That was a useful reminder that, while his career had become a fairly winding one, he could still produce when given regular football and a clear role.
Now with Partick Thistle, where he wears squad number 32, Watt remains a first-team presence rather than a name from a former Celtic youth file. In 2025-26 he has made 31 Championship appearances and scored six league goals, with three more goals in the Scottish Cup taking him to 38 appearances and nine goals in all competitions for Thistle. His current market value is around £128,000, according to Transfermarkt.
Watt’s career began with clear promise at Celtic and has since taken him through Belgium, England, Bulgaria and a long stretch around Scottish football. He is now an experienced Scottish striker still getting regular minutes in the Championship.
