Joe Newell, born on 15 March 1993 (age 33), is an English central midfielder with Hibernian, where he wears the number 11 shirt. He is a steady, established type rather than a headline act, usually working in the middle of the pitch rather than demanding much fuss around him.
His most productive league season came at Rotherham United in 2015-16, when he scored five goals in 35 appearances. That remains the clearest attacking return of his career, though his game has more often been built around involvement and reliability than regular scoring.
At Hibs, Newell has been part of the senior midfield picture across domestic and European fixtures. In 2026-27, he has made seven appearances in all competitions: one in the league, two in the League Cup, one in the Scottish Cup and three in Conference League qualifying.
Newell’s career has taken him from English football into a long Scottish Premiership spell with Hibernian. He is an experienced midfielder, important to Hibs’ first-team squad, without needing the profile to be inflated beyond that.
