Joe Newell, born on 15 March 1993 (age 33), is an English midfielder best known in Scotland for his long spell with Hibernian. Primarily used in central midfield, he wears the No 11 shirt and has been an important first-team player at Easter Road rather than a passing squad name.
Before settling at Hibs, Newell had his most productive league season with Rotherham United in 2015-16, scoring five goals in 35 appearances. That remains the clearest attacking return of his career, although his game has generally been built more around midfield continuity than headline numbers.
In 2025-26, Newell has made 11 league appearances for Hibernian, scoring once, and has also featured once in the Scottish Cup. Across all competitions that leaves him on 12 appearances and one goal for the season.
Newellโs career has been a steady one: an English midfielder who found a durable role in Scotland with Hibs, contributing regularly in the middle of the park without much fuss.
